/ Three Breeds to Know

Pick the Breed That Fits Your Output

New Zealand White

California

Rex

The industry benchmark. FCR near 3:1, litter average 8–10 kits, grow-out to 5 lb in 8–10 weeks. Consistent muscle-to-bone ratio makes processing straightforward.

Slightly leaner frame than the New Zealand, excellent dresser percentage, strong maternal instincts. A reliable crossbreeding option when you want litter size and carcass yield together.

Slower grow-out than New Zealand, but a distinctive pelt adds secondary value. Smaller litters average 6–8 kits. Best for producers who want both meat and fur utility.

Rabbit Nutrition by the Numbers

Adequate cage space, clean water access, and correct ambient temperature are not extras — they are the variables that control daily feed intake, weaning weight, and doe rebreeding intervals.

A doe eating 6–8 oz of pellets per day should wean 7+ kits at 4–5 weeks. If those numbers don't hold, housing or nutrition is the first place to check — not genetics.
